The new Medicare prescription drug benefit will create a significant shift in healthcare spending from private payers and Medicaid to Medicare, according to an analysis published in the journal Health Affairs. The report notes that by 2014, Medicare and Medicaid will account for 50 percent of all national healthcare spending. Total healthcare spending from both public and private sources will equal almost 19 percent of the U.S. gross national product by 2014.
